AskDocWeb: Hello Shinej, welcome. Although it is likely to help grow hair, it may also cause the growth of unwanted facial and body hair, and has health risks. In January of this year, the US Food and Drug Administration recalled both Minoxidil 15% and 10% because they could cause low blood pressure, heart palpitations and associated cardiac symptoms.

AskDocWeb: Smoking is known to reduce the flow of blood because it constricts capillaries. That reduces the ability of your skin to absorb minoxidil through the scalp. In fact, smoking has several negative effects that may cause hair loss. Some are pretty technical but if you know the terms used you can look these up later:
Brittle and dry hair
Does rogaine cause permanent damage to hair follicles. How long does it stay in scalp. Asking because I use rogaine for many many years with great results. But. Last year my hair became so brittle and dry. Rogaine broke off my hair so much that the back of my scalp showed. I starting using it again and my hair broke off again is very dry. Is this going to stay this way or is there hope. Plz help
AskDocWeb: Some people do see a change in hair texture while using Rogaine. If that is true for you, it is not likely to change as long as you are using the product. The good news (kind of) is that the brittle hair is only temporary and it returns to normal when the product is discontinued. However, that doesn't help with the hair loss but the following might.
Please note that there are also a number of other reasons for the hair to become dry and brittle:
Questions about Rogaine
How long does it take for hair to stop breaking off? I only used rogaine twice and it dried it out to the point it broken off. Hard to believe after only using it twice. Bit sadly true. I stopped using of course bit hair still breaking off after bring off it got almost two months. How long does it take? I am getting worried and scared. Also. It seems to have thinned out as well. But only used it twice. Is this possible that it can thin out. I don't have much hair loss. It just started. When my thyroids levels got too high and I started shedding for apnth or two. I got scared and put rogaine twice. Can you help with theses questions? Thanks.
AskDocWeb: Unless you want to wait for the hair to grow out, you'll likely need to use something else to alter the texture, like a good conditioner. It is doubtful that using Rogaine only twice would have any effect on hair loss one way or the other. According to the product data sheet it can take weeks of twice daily use before there is any noticeable effect.
